How it works

Check if food is vegan in three steps

1

Scan the barcode — or the label

Point your camera at any product barcode. No barcode? Snap a photo of the printed ingredient list or type ingredients in manually.

2

Get an instant verdict with evidence

VeganCheckr analyzes every ingredient and additive, then shows a clear vegan, vegetarian or non-vegan verdict — with the exact E-numbers and ingredients that triggered it.

3

Compare and find better options

Not vegan? See suggested alternatives in the same category, compare nutrition side by side, and save products to your offline history.

Features

Everything a vegan (or vegetarian) needs at the shelf

Seven tools in one lightweight app — built for the moment you're standing in a store holding a product, wondering.

📷

Vegan barcode scanner

🧪

Additive & E-number checker

Instantly identify animal-derived additives like E120 (carmine), E441 (gelatin) and E904 (shellac) — and get warned when a source is ambiguous, like E471.

🧀

Animal rennet detection

Vegetarian? VeganCheckr flags animal rennet in traditional cheeses like Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano and Gorgonzola — dairy doesn't always mean vegetarian.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is VeganCheckr really free?

Yes. Downloading VeganCheckr and scanning products is completely free — no account, no sign-up and no scan limits. An optional Premium upgrade adds extra convenience features, but the core vegan scanner stays free. Download it free →

How does the vegan barcode scanner work?

Point your iPhone camera at any product barcode. VeganCheckr looks up the product, analyzes every ingredient and additive, and gives you a clear vegan or non-vegan verdict — including the exact ingredients that triggered it, so you can see the evidence yourself. Learn more: How to check if food is vegan →

Can VeganCheckr detect hidden animal ingredients like E471 or carmine?

Yes. The built-in additive checker flags E-numbers that are, or can be, animal-derived — such as E471 (mono- and diglycerides), E120 (carmine), E441 (gelatin) and E904 (shellac) — and warns you when an additive's source is ambiguous. Learn more: E-numbers that are not vegan →

Does VeganCheckr work for vegetarians too?

Yes. VeganCheckr gives separate vegan and vegetarian verdicts, and it detects animal rennet in traditional cheeses such as Parmigiano Reggiano, Grana Padano, Pecorino Romano and Gorgonzola — cheeses that are not vegetarian despite being dairy. Learn more: Is rennet vegetarian? →

Can I check a product that has no barcode?

Yes. Use the ingredient scanner to photograph the printed ingredient list with your camera, or type ingredients in manually. VeganCheckr analyzes the text and tells you which ingredients are not vegan or need a closer look. Learn more: The vegan ingredient checker →

Is VeganCheckr available for Android?

Not yet. VeganCheckr currently runs on iPhone (iOS 16 or later), Apple Silicon Macs and Apple Vision Pro. An Android version is not available at the moment.

Does VeganCheckr collect my data?

No. VeganCheckr's App Store privacy label is "Data Not Collected" — the developer does not collect any data from the app. You don't need an account, and your scan history stays on your device. Read the privacy policy →

Does VeganCheckr work offline or abroad?

Your scan history is available offline, so you can re-check saved products anywhere. The app supports 32 languages and international barcodes, which makes it a practical companion for checking food while traveling. Learn more: Finding vegan food while traveling →

How do I find vegan restaurants near me?

Open the Vegan Map inside VeganCheckr to see vegan-friendly restaurants, cafés and shops around your location — at home or while traveling. Learn more: Finding vegan food anywhere →

Why do I need a scanner app — can't I just read the label?

Labels often can't tell you. Additives like E471 can be plant or animal derived, wine and beer fining agents (isinglass, casein) legally don't have to appear on labels, and "natural flavors" hide their source. VeganCheckr checks product databases and additive sources so you get an answer the label alone can't give. Learn more: Hidden animal ingredients →

Stop squinting at labels. Start scanning.

Join the vegans and vegetarians who check products in seconds instead of googling every E-number. Free on the App Store — no account, no data collected.
